top brass is making up policy on the hoof and tripping over itself
to accommodate the deregulatory pressure from government and the
employer lobby .
Work-related ill-health
kills an estimated 50,000 people per year in the UK, on top of the
number killed in mostly preventable incidents.
Evidence shows that a
strong framework of regulation and effective enforcement is what
makes workplaces safer and healthier.
HSE currently proposing
to downgrade regulations protecting workers from asbestos.
The HSC’s own assessment
is that the evidence of any progress towards meeting the modest
Revitalising Health and Safety targets is mixed, other assessments
are far less favourable.
