Hazards Conference 2004

UMIST, Manchester 16th-18th July 2004
Directory Workers' Memorial Day Hazards Conference Campaign Charter

The Hazards Campaign has decided to return to Manchester for Hazards 2004, the next Hazards Conference. This will be the 15th national Hazards Conference, and we hope to take up where Hazards 2003 left off.

For the first time since Labour achieved office in 1997, a minister actually addressed the conference. Des Browne, the recently-appointed Minister responsible for health, safety and welfare at work responded positively to the Hazards Campaign's invitation to attend. He spoke at the opening plenary, and was faced by over 450 active safety reps asking questions about the Government's plans for accountability of both company directors and corporations, the strategy for reducing work-related injury and deaths, strengthening the position of union safety representatives, and generally delivering on previous election manifesto promises.

The minister also heard from Dave Joyce of the CWU, and a passionate contribution from Ann Jones, whose son Simon was killed whilst employed by a temp agency on Shoreham Docks, and he left Hazards 2003 in no doubt about the strength of feeling expressed by both the speakers and the delegates. We hope that this will have a positive effect on his ministerial priorities.

These issues will be on the agenda again for Hazards 2004, and others will include the question of compensation, the rehabilitation of injured workers and the increasing brutalisation of work.
