Workers'
Memorial Day takes place every April 28th, an international day
of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured
or made unwell by their work. In a world where death, injury and
illness at work are hidden away and taken for granted, it is an
opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace
accidents and ill health and to promote campaigns and union organisation
in the fight for improvements in workplace safety. The slogan for
the day is Remember the dead - Fight for the living.
Workers'
Memorial Day started in Canada and was brought to the UK by the
Hazards Campaign, which campaigned
for its adoption. Now it is supported by both the TUC and the
government's Health and Safety Commission.
In Britain
the badge of Workers' Memorial Day is a purple ribbon knot. Ribbons
